Anjana Vishnuram
Anjana, a Science teacher at Preston Manor High School, describes how engaging with an Ambassador helped encourgage student involvement and excitement in participating in a competition
Was your request for an Ambassador dealt with in an efficient and timely fashion?
Yes
Please describe the activity carried out by the Ambassador
The activities involved the pupils solving clues to form the word global warming, looking at a picture of a house and identifying ways in which energy is wasted and discussing what can be done to increases energy efficiency. Wide range of activities which stimulated discussion.
Was the Ambassador well prepared?
Yes. Elena also (very kindly) bought a few gifts along for the pupils which they very much enjoyed.
Was the talk/activity pitched well for the age group? If so, how?
Yes. It included explanations of renewable and non renewable energy which is directly linked to the year 7 curriculum. The discussion also covered issues that will be covered in year 9 such as the greenhouse effect and global warming.
Did the visit link directly to the curriculum or WRL requirements? If so, how?
See above
Do you feel that the Ambassador(s) had a positive impact on the pupils? If so please describe how
Yes. After the discussion pupils were much better informed on the issues that they would need to discuss in their entries and had a much better understanding of what global warming is and the causes of it. Pupils were also clear on the role of the company by the end of the session and this encouraged pupils to find out more by getting in their entries.
Do you feel that the Ambassador(s) had a positive impact on the staff? If so, please describe how
Yes. I was much better informed on the role of M W Kellogg and it was a really great experience seeing the pupils getting involved and excited about the competition
Do you have any useful tips for other teachers on how to plan activities with Ambassadors?
Sessions could include more interactive activities (especially for pupils that have poor literacy skills) such as sort out energy resources into renewable and non-renewable. Could have picture cards for this.
Any other comments?
eg future plans for more Ambassador involvement
Myself and the pupils really enjoyed visiting M W Kellogg. We would love to be able to continue this every year as well as organising visits for our older pupils.
