Jill White
Jill White describes the how having an Ambassador assist in their 'jobs in science' week helped children to gain insight into career they may not have considered before.
Was your request for an Ambassador dealt with in an efficient and timely fashion?
Yes
Please describe the activity carried out by the Ambassador
Kelly Adighije did a presentation on the work of different people in the construction of a building and on his work as a mechanical engineer
Was the Ambassador well prepared?
Very!
Was the talk/activity pitched well for the age group? If so, how?
Yes. Some of the terms the students might not have known but Kelly made use of analogy to relate the different types of engineer to different systems of the body, which the students immediately picked up on.
Did the visit link directly to the curriculum or WRL requirements? If so, how?
It was exactly what we envisaged for our ‘jobs in science’ week. It captured the students’ imagination and gave them an insight into careers they may not have considered before.
Do you feel that the Ambassador(s) had a positive impact on the pupils? If so please describe how
Kelly was an excellent role model for the students, someone they could relate to and aspire to. He had a very good manner with the children, trying to involve everyone and accepting all responses, and changing his language so the students could understand. He also included a bit about his background at the beginning, which the students found interesting.
Do you feel that the Ambassador(s) had a positive impact on the staff? If so, please describe how
Yes, he was very polite and interested in how the school works, asking questions to those he met etc… Everyone agreed he was a great ambassador.
Do you have any useful tips for other teachers on how to plan activities with Ambassadors?
Communication is very important, so make contact as early as possible and remember that they aren’t teachers and so might need help in adapting their talk/workshop for children
Any other comments?
eg future plans for more Ambassador involvement
We will definitely be inviting ambassadors back next year!!!
