Andy Keaney

Andy Kearney describes how students were engrossed and inspired by an Ambassadors talk regarding further study of STEM subjects at university.

Please describe the activity carried out by the Ambassador

A talk was given on studying science, engineering and medicine at Imperial College, with a particular emphasis on material science.

Do you feel that the Ambassador had a positive impact on the pupils? If so please describe how.

A very positive impact. 15 students attended and all were engrossed in the talk given and the personal perspective of being a student at Imperial.

Do you feel that the Ambassador had a positive impact on the staff? If so, please describe how.

I was the only staff member to attend. I was impressed with her ability to communicate effectively with our students.

Do you have any useful tips for other teachers on how to plan activities with Ambassadors?

Set up a science/medics society by appointing a small team of dedicated students to run it – they will do most of the hard work!

Any future plans for more STEM Ambassador involvement?

Our careers advisor is planning to organise a careers fair on science and engineering in March 2009. I would like to get some Ambassadors involved in giving advice to our students
