Rhiannon Heard

Rhiannon Heard, a year 8 student, describes her school's club and the enjoyment that students get from it.

Doctor Lota and Miss Wilson run Science club and East club during Monday and Tuesday lunchtime, open to year seven and eight. This has been a very successful lunchtime club with many practical, demonstrations allowing the club members to take part in experiments themselves. The experiments range through out all three areas of science and this year have included:

  • Creating crystal gardens
  • Constructing fossils
  • Planting seeds
  • Setting concrete
  • Making plastic using milk
  • Testing the strength of pasta tubes

And many more as well as some edible demonstrations such as making radioactive popcorn and marshmallow people using DNA.

Science club and East club is a fun way to learn about science without having to sit and listen to a lecture for an hour. One regular science club member said, ‘It helps me understand stuff that I’ve done in science class and learn more about it.’ Science club supports areas that are taught in the main curriculum but also helps to explore other areas during practicals that aren’t often investigated throughout the main lessons. These scientific clubs are also helpful if you want to continue dealing with science higher up the school or in later life giving you a broader knowledge of the history of science as well as what is being developed today for the future.

These are some of the many plusses of science and East club. There are also many trips available with these clubs that explore how science is used outside of the classroom. These are fun days out where much knowledge can be gained by just looking and listening during one day. Merits are also available every time you turn up to Science or East club and participate in the experiment/activity taking place. These are totalled at the end of the year.

I hope this has given you more information on these clubs and you will consider participating in some of the activities taking place in the future.
