STEMNET host Professional Development workshop for Year 12 students
Thursday 19 January, 2012
In partnership with Wandsworth BEST, the Education Business Partnership for the London Borough of Wandsworth, STEMNET invited a group of Year 12 students to take part in a number of careers activities including mock interviews.
The session involved a keynote speech from STEM Ambassador Jo Carris, a Sustainability Consultant at the Useful Simple Trust. Following degrees in Environmental Technology and Energy Policy, Jo is currently working on the Rio 2016 Olympics and the Brazil 2014 World Cup, and was keen to share information about careers in the environmental and sustainability sectors with the students:
‘The development and re-development of our buildings, towns and cities over time is inevitable. It is going to be absolutely vital that this is done in a sustainable way. There will be an ongoing and increasing demand for technical professionals to solve the environmental challenges of the present and the future. Today’s Professional Development workshop provided a fantastic opportunity to share information about the qualifications these students may need to join these sectors and ways to demonstrate their skills to potential employers.’
Students were then invited to take part in mock interview sessions and provided with information on how to present abilities developed in the classroom as transferable, workplace skills. Each student was provided with a resource pack at the end of the event, including useful careers resources including case studies and an Employability Skills Guide.
