Maths is to be piloted as a 'twinned' GCSE

A new pilot scheme has been introduced that will allow maths to be taken as a double subject. It will be awarded as two GCSEs.

The double subject will concentrate on maths in everyday matters, including personal finance, and problem solving using maths. If successful, double maths will be made available to 700,000 teenagers each year.

The new scheme follows a survey by the Trends in International Maths and Science, which reported that England's 10-14 year olds are ranked seventh internationally in tests. This is ahead of students from other countries such as the United States, Germany and Australia.
