Primary school curriculum changes
The curriculum for schools in England could be changed by replacing individual subjects with six broad areas of learning.
The six broad areas are:
- understanding English, communication and languages
- mathematical understanding
- scientific and technological understanding
- human, social and environmental understanding
- understanding physical health and well-being
- understanding the arts and design
The report headed by Jim Rose, government adviser and former Ofstead director of inspection, states that more attention should also be spent on ICT, and that the level of ICT taught to secondary schools should be reflected at primary school level too. Primary school pupils should be encouraged to use ICT as a research tool and to create documents such as podcasts and word presentations.
Sir Jim Rose said "One highly promising route to meeting the demand for in-depth teaching and learning is undoubtedly emerging through ICT. The primary curriculum needs to be forward-looking."
