Britian is running out of funghi experts
Britian is fast running out of mycologists (funghi experts) leaving other countries to capitalise on funghi-based discoveries in medicine and other sciences.
During the 1990s there were just 32 mycologists in Great Britian, now there are only 8. The fear is that mycology is not seen as a glamorous career route for many biologists, who would rather use the latest technology in laboratories than gather mushrooms in woods and forests. Yet mycology has an important impact on various industries including food and aerospace.
There are now plans to bring funghi-based lessons into the curriculum and also create mycology as a field of study in universities, but without quick action experts warn that the study of mycology could be a thing of the past within the next ten years.
