  1. Introduction
When you visit any of our websites (www.stemnet.org.uk and its microsites, db.stemnet.org.uk, www.stemclubs.net, www.stemchallenges.net) we want to make it an easy, useful and reliable user experience. This sometimes involves placing small amounts of information on your device, for example, computer or mobile phone. These include small files known as cookies. They cannot be used to identify you personally. Note: A ‘User’ in this context would be the person sat at a computer or using a mobile device to browse the internet.
  2. What is a cookie?
Cookies do lots of different jobs, such as letting you navigate between pages efficiently, storing your preferences, and generally improving your experience of a website. Cookies make the interaction between you and the website faster and easier. If a website doesn’t use cookies, it will think you are a new visitor every time you move to a new page on the site, for example, when you enter your login details and move to another page, it won’t recognise you and it won’t be able to keep you logged in.
  3. What is in a cookie?
A cookie is a simple text file that is stored on your computer or mobile device by websites that you visit. Only that website’s server will be able to retrieve or read the contents of that cookie. Each cookie is unique to your web browser.
  4. Types of cookies
A cookie is a small file, typically of letters and numbers. There are three difference types of cookies:

    • Session cookies
    • Persistent cookies
    • First and Third Party cookies
  5. About our cookies
Our websites use the cookies detailed below. A cookie is a small file of letters and numbers that we put on your computer if you agree. These cookies allow us to distinguish you from other users of the website which helps us to provide you with a good experience when you browse our website and also allows us to improve our sites.
The ‘analytical’ cookies we use allow us to recognise and count the number of visitors and to see how visitors move around the site when they are using it. This helps us to improve the way our website works, for example by making sure users are finding what they need easily.
