Aaron Lamb

Aaron hopes that by becoming a STEM Ambassador, he can make a change: ‘It makes a big difference having a STEM Ambassador come into school to talk about different jobs that are out there. I was lucky in that my visit to BT’s science park inspired me to think about technology.’

Aaron also took part in a “Young enterprise” scheme at school, which was about running a real business to solve real problems, out of class hours. Different business people came to visit the group and Aaron benefited from it immensely.

‘Initially I was the MD but soon realised that I was doing more of the marketing work, so I stepped down and changed roles with another group member. It was a great experience on having a structure behind making decisions.’

Aaron recently ran a storyboarding workshop, which didn’t involve any complex artwork, he simply used stick men. He had great feedback from students, saying that it really inspired them.

‘When you have affected a change in a young person it’s great. Sometimes you hear that a student who was very vocal in your activity is normally quiet in class. You could have just given them the confidence that may well change them for life.’

Aaron is aware that in certain less privileged areas, there are students who aren’t able to go out on field trips and visits. So a visit from a STEM Ambassador and getting an insight into the working world is all the more valuable.

Aaron admits that it was quite a strange experience recently giving a talk about apprenticeships, with his old school teachers in the crowd bragging about him! He hopes his enthusiasm about apprenticeships can be carried forward by these same teachers to even more students.
