Alicia Blatiak
Alilcia Blatiak, a university student, inspired pupils at a girls' school to study STEM subjects by talking about university and her student life.
Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?
I took part in a teaching placement over the summer and think it’s very important for young people to get involved in motivating school children to learn more about science and engineering.
On average, how much time do you commit to STEM Ambassador activities?
I recently took part in my first activity.
Describe the latest activity you were involved in.
I gave a talk at a girls’ school on studying engineering at university and about my student life.
What was your role in this activity? What were you responsible for?
I was the presenter. I was given roughly an hour to present and take questions.
What do you feel were the positive outcomes for the pupils and teaching staff?
I think the students enjoyed hearing about university life and what studying engineering was like from someone who was currently experience it. They got insight into what it was like and I think it was useful for them, as engineering is not something readily offered at schools.
What do you feel were the positive outcomes for yourself?
I enjoyed sharing my experiences and the information I had. I think I motivated the pupils and showed my enthusiasm for my subject.
Do you have any tips for future STEM Ambassadors?
I would say, think back to when you were at school and what motivated you or what you think might have been useful- you now have the opportunity to fulfil that for pupils at schools.
Any other comments
I will be taking part in more activities soon!
