Andrew Forster

Andrew Forster, a Standards Engineer, recently took part in a Q&A session as part of a school's career day.

Why did you decide to become an Ambassador?

It was introduced to me through the Engineering Education Scheme.

On average, how much time do you commit to STEM Ambassador activities?

1 day per year

Describe the latest activity you were involved in.

I was involved in a careers talk to two groups of Year 11 students during Careers Day at Quintin Kynaston School.

What was your role in this activity? What were you responsible for?

With one other colleague, we gavepresentation about engineering as a career, and answered questions.

What do you feel were the positive outcomes for the pupils and teaching staff?

They were introduced to the different branches and levels of careers in engineering. They found out what qualifications and subjects they would need to pursue the various options.

What do you feel were the positive outcomes for yourself?

  • The experience demonstrated my commitment to the promotion of engineering as a profession (ticks boxes with the institutions for professional registration);
  • It gave me a better understanding of what motivates young people when choosing a career, allowing us to improve our recruitment tactics.
  • And we enjoyed it.

Do you have any tips for future STEM Ambassadors?

It has proven beneficial to build a relationship with one school rather than going to different ones every year.
